Brazilian Newspaper Matches Crosstown Rival: Buys Tera GN3 Editorial Content Management System
MILAN, Italy, 26-Aug-08 — Tera Digital Publishing has consolidated its position as the dominant vendor of editorial systems in Brazil with a sale to the top-selling newspaper in the state of Espirito Santo, one of the most developed and fastest growing regions in the south-east of the country.
A Tribuna (the Tribune), newspaper flagship of Rede Tribuna de Comunicação (Tribune Network), has bought TeraDP’s GN3 system for its entire newsroom as part of a plan to maintain its circulation dominance in the conurbation surrounding the state capital, Vitória. Rede Tribuna, part of the Grupo Industrial João Santos, also has radio and TV properties in the state, but has been battling to become the newspaper circulation leader since a redesign as a popular tabloid in 1995 to give it a bolder, more modern typography, and the purchase of a new press to give it full-color capability.
At 70,000 circulation on a weekday, 80,000 on Saturday and 100,000 on Sunday, the 132-page newspaper became the biggest-selling title in the greater Vitória area, which has a population of over 500,000, in 1999. And it became and the biggest seller in Espirito Santo state in the following year.
As many as 78 per cent of the residents of greater Vitória, a region spread across 34 islands and a piece of the Brazilian mainland and connected to it by the highest bridge in the country, now read the 66-year-old Tribune.
But Rede Tribuna wants more for its growing title and its previous systems were seen as becoming a bottleneck to sales. Having watched the successful implementation of GN3 at Gazeta (Gazette), flagship of its competitor, Rede Gazeta de Comunicação (Gazette Network) in Vitória, the Tribune has ordered 45 seats of Ted, Tera’s editing application, and eight seats of Fred, its page layout application, to take it into the future as the circulation area grows.
The Vitória region, based on two thriving ports, one for cruise ships which bring visitors to the scenically beautiful tropical islands in the shadow of a 15,000-foot mountain, and one for industry, was originally a coffee-growing area but is now growing fast based on iron ore, industrial development, and, most recently, oil exploration. The region is close to Brazil’s big urban centers, being only an hour or so from the nation’s three biggest cities, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Belo Horizonte.
Rede Tribuna is also looking forward to being able to buy other Tera products that it believes will enable the Tribune to mesh more easily with its lively web site (http://www.redetribuna.com.br) and its radio and TV properties to consolidate its multi-media network in Espirto Santo.
