Chicago Daily Law Bulletin Goes Live with Tera’s GN3 Editorial Content Management System

Chicago — The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin has gone live with its new installation of a GN3 editorial system from Tera Digital Publishing.

Fred Faulkner, Vice President of IT for the Law Bulletin Publishing Company, said the go-live, on May 14, was completely successful and “we didn’t miss a beat”.

The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, which is the oldest daily courts newspaper in the United States, bought a complete editorial system suite from Tera to allow it to develop a single newsroom operation in which its journalists may simultaneously produce the print product and its subscription-only web site.

The system at the paper includes GN3’s Ted editing application, Fred page layout tool, Shell content management tool, as well as Tera’s new GNWeb and GNPortal “one-click-to-web” products for its web site.

The go-live involved moving over to GN3 all the journalism pages in the paper, said Fred Faulkner. The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin also includes pages of court information that will remain database driven for the foreseeable future. But, he said, “The go-live went without fail. There were some little blips in the final hours but we had Tera on site to smooth through those issues.”

Tera staff was on site in Chicago for the first two live days on GN3.

“Success was based on the work of a lot of people ahead of time and careful planning. Tera was in the right place at the right time, with the right amount of instructional help.”

Faulkner said “The publisher was entirely satisfied,” with the move to GN3 and journalists at the paper had also “enthusiastically welcomed the new system.”

One of the concerns had been how well page designers would handle the new Fred layout application in GN3. But, said Faulkner, “To our surprise they very easily took to Fred. There was a learning curve, but for those things we needed to get the paper out it was very small and Tera worked with us to configure things, for example in Shell and Ted on the authoring side.”

Summing up the go-live operation, Fred Faulkner said he was pleased with its success, and, he said, “There is obviously more to learn about the system. So far we have only scratched the surface. And we are looking forward to getting to it”.

The paper will also now move towards implementing GNWeb and GNPortal for its web presence.

The company hopes the new Tera system will allow it to present a new dynamic face to its paper and web site, says Faulkner.
